Welcome to the Manalapan Englishtown Regional Schools English as a Second Language (ESL) web page!
At the time of student enrollment into MERS, a screening process is used to ascertain each student’s native language. The English language proficiency of each student whose native language is not English shall be determined. An assessment of the student’s level of reading in English, a review of the student’s previous academic performance, and standardized test performance will all be considered.
The ESL program in MERS provides at least one period of ESL instruction daily based on student language proficiency. All students enrolled in the ESL program will be assessed annually using a New Jersey Department of Education approved English Language Proficiency test to determine their progress in achieving English language proficiency and readiness for exiting the program.
Parents will be notified if their child has been identified as eligible for enrollment in an ESL program. Our MERS ESL department holds Parent Advisory Meetings three times per year. Topics of these meetings vary and are influenced by parents’ interests and questions. In addition, we welcome families of the program to an end-of-the-year Family Night where students’ achieved goals and progress are showcased and celebrated!
