Dear Parent/Guardian: Our instrumental music program aims to provide students with enrichment opportunities that enhance their experience in becoming lifelong learners. Students involved in the program achieve a deeper growth of musical skills and proper technique through regularly scheduled weekly lessons where they continue to receive new, more challenging pieces of music to study, learn, and perfect. These experiences are meant to support and supplement each child’s musical education experience as outlined by the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards for Visual and Performing Arts. One key component of the Visual and Performing Arts is that students will synthesize their skills to create, perform, and present works of art in music. This is achieved through the students’ participation in band or orchestra. In an effort to support the standards, all students who are taking instrumental music lessons through a school program will also be required to be members of their home school band or orchestra. As a member of the school band or orchestra, students will be required to attend all rehearsals and participate in concert performances. Consistency across all schools throughout the district will not only support the arts programs that are so important to our culture, but will encourage students to develop 21st Century Skills, such as effective communication and collaboration. Concert performance is the culminating celebration of the students’ learning; it provides an outstanding opportunity for students to collaborate and to showcase their hard-work to the local community. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the district’s program. Sincerely, Janice Brown Janice Brown MERS Instrumental Music Supervisor
