Dear Parents/Guardians,

Each year, our school continues to seek better ways of teaching the basic mathematical and problem-solving skills needed by our students according to our state’s standards. One manner in which skills are strengthened is through our schools Response to Intervention (RTI) program in mathematics.  This program provides targeted instruction designed to develop skills and strategies needed for success in this subject area.  It is provided in addition to classroom instruction.  As had been done in the previous years, we will continue to offer this support through our Before-the-School Day Mathematics RTI program.  Participation in the Before-the-School Day Mathematics RTI program benefits your child as he/she would not be missing any class time.

Recent review of your child’s end-of-year assessment data in mathematics along with teacher input indicates that your child may qualify for a 15-18 week Tier 2 intervention for the 2019-2020 school year. If your child qualifies for the round that begins in September, at the conclusion of the intervention round, the intervention teacher will send you an update regarding your child’s progress.  Determinations will be made at that time if the intervention will continue and what skill(s) the intervention plan will target. Students will be eligible to be exited from these programs as they consistently near and/or meet grade level benchmarks.

An additional component of any Tier 2 intervention is that the building’s Problem Solving Team will be available for consultation. The intervention team consists of the building administrators, Child Study Team members, the speech specialist, school counselor, reading and math specialists.  The goal of the intervention team is to ensure that your child’s Tier 2 intervention is successful. This could be accomplished in any of the following ways: observation, informal assessment or a detailed review of student progress. The intervention team member will then use the information obtained to make recommendations that will improve the effectiveness of the intervention. During this process, your child might work on specific tasks with a member of the intervention team.

In September after final confirmation of tiered placements, you will receive more specific information from the mathematics intervention teacher who will be working with your child. ***Please be advised that for students entering grades 4 and 5 in the fall that the final eligibility for this level and type of intervention may be adjusted based on your child’s NJSLA results in mathematics. It is possible that some scores may exit students from this level of intervention.

However, to help us plan accordingly, we request that you complete the second page attached to this letter and mail it back to the school by August 1, 2019.  You can also respond via the Google form at
