Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge

Read on for more information out this year's summer reading challenge... This is for our incoming 1st-5th graders!

Dear Clark Mills Families,

***Your child's special, unique log-in will be sent home with your child no later than Thursday,May 30th.  Please check his/her folder for this information.

We want to share with you some exciting information about a summer learning initiative we are promoting once again at Clark Mills School.

Reading is a great way to help children develop vocabulary, increase comprehension and reduce summer learning loss.  Studies show that children who do not read or have access to books during the summer lose up to two months of reading performance. According to research from the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™: 6th Edition, 64% of parents with children ages 6–17 have heard of the summer slide—the common loss of academic skills over the school break— from their child’s teacher. The research also reveals that public libraries are the top resource for parents/guardians to ensure their child is reading over the summer. We, here at Clark Mills School, are committed to building a community of readers and have taken steps each year to motivate our students to actively engage with literature and texts over the upcoming summer months.

Once again, for our summer reading challenge, Clark Mills School will be working with to track our students’ independent summer reading from May 30th through September 6th.  This year, Scholastic’s newest theme, Read-A-Palooza, will encourage students across the country to keep reading this summer while giving back to others. Students and families can help get at least 200,000 books to kids with limited or no access to books nationwide. Here’s how:

Corporate Donations: As kids enter their minutes in the Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge, the website’s minute counter keeps track of their collective progress.  When total minutes read reach 25, then 50 and then 100 million minutes collectively, Scholastic will donate at least 200,000 books to kids in need across the country. Areas will be identified with help from a Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza non-profit partner organization. Selection of recipients to receive books will be made in Scholastic's sole discretion.

In addition, through the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge website (, registrants will have access to free educational resources including booklists for all ages, video content from literacy experts and popular children’s book authors, downloadable group activities and more.

Please note the following important dates for the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge:

  • May 6th: The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge Begins: Students can log their reading minutes online and gain access to other activities. We are starting on May 30th.  The Challenge will close on Friday, September 6, 2019.

To further promote reading this summer we at Clark Mills School will be offering prizes.

  • The five students (top student in each grade level – incoming grades 1-5) that reads the most books (as measured by completed logged information on your individual log-in on will win a $25 gift card.

We all know that reading is important.  We also know that motivating a child to read can be challenging, especially during the last two months of school and during summer vacation! Take a trip to the library or Barnes and Noble or browse on  Have your child choose a book to read.  Better yet, enjoy the book TOGETHER! Reading can be a special time between family members and friends!

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure that Clark Mills students continue to strengthen their literacy skills this spring/summer.

Thank you,

Mrs. Orlando
