Summer District Reading Assignments for Students in Grades 1-8

If your child is entering into grade 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 in September, please read this letter which outlines the assignments for you:

  • If your child is entering first, second, or third grade , we encourage them to read for enjoyment only.  There is no formal assignment required. The book lists for these grade levels are presented in two  sections. The first section offers suggested titles for your child to read independently. The second  section offers suggested titles for you to read with your child. It is suggested that designated reading  time take place daily.  
  • If your child is entering fourth or fifth grade, they should choose one title from the suggested list and  complete the assignment found as a link in the PDF file named Summer Reading Assignments -  Grades 4 - 8 . Fourth and fifth graders are encouraged to read as much as possible over the summer  months, however, they only need to complete a reflection sheet for one book. This reflection sheet  should be returned to your child’s teacher in September. Our fifth grade list contains Lexile reading  levels to guide in selecting books. If your child is entering into grade 6, 7, 08 in September, please read this letter:

  • If your child is entering sixth grade, they should read one book from the summer reading list. They should then complete the assignment for the book found as a link in the PDF file named Summer Reading Assignments - Grades 4 - 8. Students are encouraged to read additional books throughout the summer. 
  • If your child is entering seventh grade, they should read The Outsiders and are encouraged to read other books of their choice throughout the summer. They should then complete the assignment for The Outsiders found as a link in the PDF file named Summer Reading Assignments - Grades 4 - 8
  •  If your child is entering eighth grade, they should read Stargirl and are encouraged to read other books of their choice throughout the summer. They should then complete the assignment for Stargirl found as a link in the PDF file named Summer Reading Assignments - Grades 4 - 8.

Titles are available through The Monmouth County Library and Barnes & Noble in Freehold should you opt to  purchase books. We would like to thank the library for making our reading list available through ebooks and  other avenues. More information is available on their website. Summer reading lists and accompanying  materials can be found on the Curriculum Department page of the district website.
