MERS Summer Reading Lists
Is your child entering into grades 1-5 in the fall? If so, please go to click on "Summer Reading Lists" below to access all lists and information regarding this task.
Summer is rapidly approaching! This may mean days at the beach, family vacations, and of course summer reading. With your support, summer reading can help your child maintain their reading abilities. The following pages contain a grade level book list developed by a team of educators from our schools based on student reading abilities, choice, and interest.
- If your child is entering first, second, or third grade , we encourage him/her to read for enjoyment only. There is no formal assignment required. The book lists for these grade levels are presented in two sections. The first section offers suggested titles for your child to read independently. The second section offers suggested titles for you to read with your child. We encourage our students to read as much as possible over the summer months.
- If your child is entering fourth or fifth grade, he/she should choose one title from the suggested list and complete the attached reflection sheet. Fourth and fifth graders are also encouraged to read as much as possible over the summer months, however, they only need to complete a reflection sheet for one book. This reflection sheet should be returned to your child’s teacher in September. Our fifth grade list contains Lexile reading levels to guide in selecting books. Your child should know their Lexile level and it should also be on your child’s report card. More information regarding Lexiles can be found at https://lexile.com .
Titles are available through The Monmouth County Library as they have received our book lists. In addition, Barnes & Noble in Freehold have received the lists should you opt to purchase the books.
Summer reading lists and accompanying materials can be found on under the Curriculum Department page of the district website. Click on the “Summer Assignment Packets” link on the left side to access the documents. Thank you for your support of our program and have a wonderful summer.
