The Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) Department is designed to address the specialized needs of students eligible for services under the requirements of New Jersey Administrative Code 6A:14 Special Education and the US Rehabilitation Act of 1973. All staff assigned to support the needs of students who qualify under either program are overseen in the PPS department. Services for students who have specialized needs include either an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for specialized instruction and related services, an IEP for speech only, or a 504 plan for a disability. The goal of all plans is for students to receive a free and appropriate public education.
IEPs are developed through efforts from dedicated staff and parents called the "IEP team". The purpose of the IEP team is to create an individualized plan that identifies a program and supports necessary for the student to gain educational benefit from attending school. Students eligible for speech-only IEPs receive individualized services from a speech specialist targeting articulation and/or language-based deficits.
The staff on the IEP team include members of the child study team; school psychologist, school social worker, and learning disabilities teacher-consultant. Related service providers such as speech, occupational and physical therapies and counseling providers are part of the team as well. Additional staff on the IEP team are based on the needs of the student such as Board Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA), hearing impaired teacher or orientation and mobility specialist.
504 plans are developed by staff and parents to accommodate a disability that substantially impacts a major life function. The purpose of the 504 plan is to "level the playing field" for the student to progress in their education. Members of the 504 team include the 504 coordinator, teacher(s) and parent.
In addition, the PPS Department includes Guidance, Special Education Coaches, Homeless Coordinator, Title IX, Mental Health Initiative, AntiBullying Coordinator and Special Education Medicaid Initiative (SEMI).
Additional information about a 504 plan can be found here.
